Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Number Strips

  1. Cut the number strips away from the main panel and set them aside.

2. Fold and Press the Panel

  1. Unfold the main stocking panel completely.

  2. Re-fold it in half along the dotted line that runs from selvage to selvage (across the middle of the panel), placing wrong sides together.

  3. If your panel comes in two pieces, cut off your number strips and then layer your stocking panels together so that the edges of your stockings are aligned, with wrong sides together.

    • This ensures the front and back of each stocking, as well as each lining, will be matched when cutting.

  1. Align the selveges so the pieces line up accurately.

  2. Press the folded panel firmly with an iron to hold the layers together.

3. Cut the Panel Apart

  1. With the panel still folded, begin cutting your panel into strips, as shown in the above video, working from the folded edge and running parallel to the selvedges.

  2. Cut apart each of these strips, as shown, separating each stocking.

    • You will be cutting through both layers of fabric at once.

4. Cut Out the Stockings

  1. Separate each stocking from its contrasting lining piece by cutting along the printed outlines.

  2. You will now have pairs: two stocking pieces: front/back and two lining pieces: front/back..

  3. Lay out your stockings so that the colors vary, this is how they will look when hanging.

5. Prepare the Number Tabs

  1. Take the number strips and fold each one in half lengthwise to create a center crease.

  2. Open each strip, then fold the long edges in toward the center crease (wrong sides together), just like making bias tape.

  3. Press firmly.

  4. Cut the folded strips apart into individual numbers along the printed dotted lines.

  5. Fold each number piece in half, as shown, to form a hanging tab.

  6. Working in order, lay each number tag on top of your arranged stockings.

6. Assemble Each Stocking

For each stocking:

a. Layer the Pieces

  1. Start with your first stocking. Open your stocking pieces and place them right side up on your table.

  2. Center the folded number tab on the top edge of the back stocking  piece, using the printed guidelines, with the number facing up.

  3. Place the lining piece right side down on top of the stocking, sandwiching the number tab between them.

  4. Pin in place.

  5. Sew across the top edge.

  6. Remove the pin and finger-press the seam.

b. Attach the Second Lining Piece

  1. Place the second lining piece on the front of the stocking in the same way as above, right sides together.

  2. Pin and sew across the top edge.

7. Sew the Stocking Together

  1. Pin the stocking and lining layers together, matching edges.

  2. Sew carefully around the entire outer edge using a ¼” seam allowance.

  3. Clip or notch the seam allowance around curved areas to ensure a clean, smooth shape when turned.

    • A shorter stitch length helps with smooth curves.

8. Turn and Finish

  1. Turn the stocking right side out.

  2. Push out the curves gently and tuck the lining down into the stocking.

  3. Repeat for all 24 stockings.

9. Hang Your Stockings

  1. Thread the number tabs onto the provided twill tape in order (or in a fun mixed order).

  2. Your Sugarplum Advent Calendar is ready to display!
